In vitro fertilization refers to a complex series of procedures which are used in the treatment of fertility or genetic problems. The main aim is usually to assist in conception of a child. During the procedure, there is collection of mature eggs from the ovaries, which are then fertilized by sperms in a lab. This is followed by implantation of the fertilized eggs in the uterus. One cycle of IVF intro vitro fertilization takes about two weeks.

This is the single most effective form of assisted reproduction. One option is to use eggs the woman and sperms of their partner. The other option will be when the eggs and sperms are all from different people, known as donors. There is the option of using a gestational carrier. This is usually a woman who will have the embryo implanted in their uterus to carry it to term.

The chances of one having a baby successfully using the procedure will depend on a number of factors. These include the age of the person and causes of the infertility. Further, it is a time-consuming process and which is also very costly. It should also be noted that it is invasive. In the event that more than one embryo is implanted within the uterus, IVF could result in pregnancy with more than one fetus, what is commonly referred to as multiple pregnancy.

While this is not usually the case, it will be more probable in women that are older.

When it comes to choice of the clinic to go to, there are factors to consider. The success rate will depend on the techniques used by the clinic as well as their treatment population. One should always confirm costs of the procedure beforehand. One is also required to undergo various screenings before the cycle is started. Ovarian reserve testing is one such procedure and is used to check egg quality. There should also be analysis of semen.

There are various steps involved for the actual procedure. These include ovulation induction, retrieval of the eggs, sperm retrieval, fertilization and then finally transfer of the embryo. Each cycle takes roughly two weeks and more than one cycle is required.

In some cases, there might be the need to cancel IVF. It is something that is done for various reasons. It could be that there are not enough follicles developing or the ovulation was premature. Also, there are some medical conditions that would mean one is not suited.
